I don't get it.

I'm blond by the way.

Blondie:

Uh, you mean you don't get the cartoon? Or you don't get people ringing your doorbell saying 'Democracy calling'?

Posted by: Valerie at October 14, 2004 07:33 AM

Valerie

Valerie from Texas explained it to me. Now I see that it is a cartoon of Afghan women weaving a rug of democracy, with the men contributing the materials. So it's symbolic of Afghanis all coming together working toward a common goal.

I didn't see the weavers as women originally because well...

The one on the right has the Schwarzennegger arms, and a druid hood, and the one on the left has the Popeye forearm thing with what looks to me like a white beard!

It's alright now though. Like I said, Val straightened me out.

That is just how I see it Tiger. Now that you mention it, the darker of the seated figures could be an elderly man. It just made me think of the quote from the young man who was so estatic to be voting, he said something to the effect of making their government with their own hands.

My husband, whose eyesight is a 100 times better than mine, claims he doesn't see a woman in sight. Maybe it is wishful thinking on my part.

Uh, actually, the only thing that bothered me about this cartoon was...that there are no women in it. I think the two seated figures are men.

I see what look like two Iraqis (south & north) standing watching an old man (left) and a young UNBEARDED man (right) weaving Democracy together. The observers seem to be pleased, btw, and certainly represent different segments of Iraqi peoples. Note that there are no turbanned cleric-types.

And no women, but when I posted the cartoon, I decided that I wasn't going to bring that up...

If I'm not mistaken, women will be 1/4 of the upcoming Iraqi assembly, it's in the constitution.

I'm still blond.

Paper -

We accept all races and creeds here. Even blonds.

To be fair, Afghan rugs are traditionally woven by old men (sedentary work) and boys (nimble, small fingers). Afghan women made up 40 percent of the registered voters.

Sure, but it would have been nice if the cartoonist had included a woman somewhere in his image...especially as they did vote.

Posted by: Valerie at October 15, 2004 01:26 PM

I'll second that.

Doug... Doug... Doug.... :^0

Is she going to be on the Afgan Olympic Volleyball team?

Posted by: andy at October 16, 2004 11:30 AM

Now THAT would be something. All the Afghan and Iraqi women bundled up from head to toe playing volley.

Andy, why exactly would that interest you, huh?

Posted by: Valerie at October 16, 2004 12:39 PM

Valerie, you have to ASK?

Honey we have GOT to get you out of there. How about a telethon? Any one have an "in" with Special Ops guys? Connections with the Mob? Bada-bing, bada-boom, and you would be home again soon.

LOL I could be the 'October Surprise' that the Dems keep saying W is going to come up with!

LOL

All I can say is we'd better not find bin Laden before Nov. 2. We'll never hear the end of it.

Posted by: Doug at October 17, 2004 12:43 AM

On the contrary...as long as he gets picked up here in France, I'm all for it.

Kill 2 weasels with one stone.

I seem to have a different recollection of the, well, uniforms, of the Olympic female volleyball players. Not much bundling up of anything…

Bin Laden in France? Why, val, how could you make such an assumption?

Posted by: andy at October 17, 2004 11:48 AM

Andy:

Well, yes, of course, I remember that the athletes playing in women's volley were dressed like strippers. But none were from muslim countries where women are still very afraid of getting too much sun. I'm not sure why...maybe the mullahs have told them that sun will make them feel sexy...I'm not sure.

As for BLaden...He is certainly admired in many quarters here... He's the one the Amurikens haven't caught yet.

I can see him living next to Araflatulence's PLO queen in Paris, can't you? With weekely visits from the elite of both Paris' Left and muslim moderates.

Except each other.
