Sheikh who?

"Sheikh" literally means "chief", and is the standard hororary reference to a cleric, just as catholics use "Father" or "Père".
I used to get big laughs out of one of my former project managers, an Iranian Jew by calling him "Sheikh".
Among village bumkins it's also a basic reference to the local smart guy, like a country doctor. In the eastern med they used the word "afendi" the same way.
