Well, that didn't take...long
Essence is taking on the slut images and verbal abuse projected onto black women by hip hop lyrics and videos.
Although I would disagree with who is doing the projecting. Seems to me it's the male performers themselves who are projecting, not the lyrics or videos.
Can't say that I've listened to much hip hop. I heard some group massacre 'Killing Me Softly' a long time ago and that was about the last time I gave up any of my precious time to any of it. Of course, even some of the more recent animated films are using hip hop in their soundtracks, so you're forced to listen to it. As musical illustration, I find it lacking. It doesn't provoke any emotion in me, except annoyance.
But, then, I'm out of the loop. I remember hearing 'hit me baby one more time' and wondering what that was supposed to mean - 'hit me' was what we used to say when we played blackjack.
Not very hip, am I.
