Glow-ball warning
Under the Kyoto Protocol, undeveloped Third-World nations – including China, India, Brazil and Mexico – will be free to produce whatever they want. Yet 82 percent of the projected emissions growth in future years will come from these countries. This is why many critics see is (sic) global wealth redistribution scheme rather than a real plan to improve the environment."The wealth of the United States is, and has always been, the target," says Tom DeWeese, president of the American Policy Center. "The new scheme to grab the loot is through environmental scare tactics."
He predicts international corporations, "who owe allegiance to no nation, will bolt America and move their factories, lock, stock, and computer chip to those Third World countries where they will be free to carry on production. But that means the same emissions will be coming out of the jungles of South America instead of Chicago. So where is the protection of the environment? You see, it's not about that, is it?"
He points out that hidden in the small print of the treaty is a provision that calls for the "harmonizing of patent laws."
"Now, robbing a nation of its patent protection is an interesting tactic for protecting the environment, don't you think?" he adds.
DeWeese concludes: "The fact is that one person now stands between the global warming jackals and economic sanity — George W. Bush. Will he stand firm in his opposition to the Kyoto Protocol? Or will he capitulate to massive international pressure and sell America's soul?"

Posted by Valerie at January 24, 2005 10:34 AMScientists predict global warming this year (!) from June through September followed by the mysterious global cooling, October through April. Nothing is predicted for May, which could go either way.

Posted by: Damian at January 24, 2005 11:45 AMWhat's odd is that this thing called snow only falls during the periods of cooling! Surely a sign of meteorological mischief!
Posted by: Valerie at January 24, 2005 12:54 PMActually down here it has been very warm so far this winter. With only a brief dip into old Man Winter's swimming pool around Christmas week it has been, some days, down right hot. (Friday, 1/21) it tapped 79F. About 37C, I think.) Even for here, that is warmer, much warmer than the norm. So the area Glo-ball warming fanatics have been shrieking like air-raid sirens. It grows so tiresome.
What happened to all those predictions that we were headed for a new ice-age because of pollutionh? Personally now, I was looking rorward to cooler summers!
Any one catch that documentary on the BBC several weeks ago called Global Dimming? They had scientists on who were claiming that it was because of certain emissions from fossil fuels that the earth wasn't heating up!
And then, there is Mars. Mars is heating up too.
Explain that Al Gore? Place has never seen an SUV.
No, the Mars probes/rovers don't count.

It HAS been warmer here than usual, but the only whining I've heard has been my own ( for having to mow the lawn in the winter).
Al would explain Mars' increase in temperature a result of it's proximity to earth, which as we all know is warming at an alarming rate. As we burn more fuel and heat the earth, we radiate some of that heat into space, which is absorbed by Mars. Melting of the Martian polar caps will ultimately be blamed on Halliburton, the Bush family, and American suburban mothers. Eventually, thousands of martians living in coastal martian colonies will be left homeless by the rising waters. Martians will have no choice but to fly their saucers into American hi-rise buildings to draw attention to their plight...
Sorry, it's hard to be serious about some of these claims. How would anybody be able to figure out the temperature patterns of another planet with any accuracy? If they were able to understand those, they should easily be able to tell us what the average temps will be like on this planet from one year to the next. As far as I know, they haven't managed more than about a 10 day forecast.
All the greenie hypocrites I work with (a LOT of them in Architecture) - drive SUVs. It's all about feelings. None of them have to slog through the technical crap (which makes buildings into money-pits and still "pollutant"), but I do, and I've had E-nough!, I tell ya!
Greenies are watermelons - green on the outside, red on the inside. tfeh! They don't care what it costs the owner, or if a product's manufacturer has no competition and can name their price, they don't even care if the roof leaks! As long as it says it's "green".
Green THIS (gesticulating indelicately), spanky!
Posted by: Joe N. at January 24, 2005 11:41 PMI'll have to remember that 'watermelon' bit.
But, you know, it's OK to drive a SUV if it's not yours. You know, your colleagues' SUVs might all, in fact, be registered in their spouses' names, so, really, they're not hurting the environment at all.
Recently saw a 'documentary' on Brit TV called 'What would Jesus drive?'...going on about how most American families have 3 cars, etc. It was yet another try at criticizing America, but, in fact, it made life look, well, good, there.
One woman interviewed said that she'd given her godson a 4x4 for his 16th birthday. I'm sure people watching thought 'My, Americans must make good money if they're buying cars for their godchildren!' I got a good chuckle out of it.
Posted by: Valerie at January 25, 2005 08:50 AMThat's right, we have three cars each. And since we can't drive them all at the same time, we leave two idling in the driveway with bricks on the gas pedals.
