Infidels purportedly not behaving well
See that's okay to burn US and Israeli flags, it's okay to call non-believers in Allah infidels, but it's not okay to think or act the other way around. Supposing this story is true.
Emphasis mine.
Angry protests raged across the Muslim world from Indonesia to Gaza on Friday over a report that U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay had desecrated the Koran, with calls for retaliation and a rising death toll....
Washington sought to stem Muslim anger as allies demanded investigations and thousands took to the streets in outrage over the Newsweek magazine report that interrogators at the U.S. military prison in Cuba had put the Muslim holy book on a toilet and at least once flushed it down.
...
"The Holy Koran was defiled by the dirtiest of hands, by American hands," a protester shouted at the Jabalya refugee camp in Gaza, where U.S. and Israeli flags were also burned.
Of course, as always, Al-Reuters gets in the blame-America-first game, mentioning a "damaged reputation". Yeah right, while they loved the US, the US are desecrating their Holy Book.
Sincerely, what "reputation"? The kind that says American hands are "the dirtiest of hands"?
"Demonstrations serve no purpose, we should do something practical. I am ready to blow myself up for the sake of my religion to embrace martyrdom," said Mohammad Ghafoor, 18, a student protesting in Peshawar, Pakistan.
That would be "for the sake" of the religion of peace.
Makes me feel like flushing... stuff.
Posted by Carine at May 14, 2005 12:04 PMI can't say that I'm at all surprised by any of it. Rumours are a very common thing to the arab and muslim world. When people's lives limited, are empty, they find passion in that sort of hatred. All it takes is to pour the hateful ideology into the pot and to let it cook itself...
Posted by: Joe N. at May 14, 2005 10:58 PMNot to mention they have no other source of information but their king, dictator, or mullah. A certain amount will sink in and do permanent damage, at least with a few percentage points of the population.
Posted by: Jay at May 15, 2005 08:44 AMIf I had any idea it would upset them so, I would have bought a koran, and hung it by the toilet long ago.
Posted by: papertiger at May 15, 2005 02:55 PMFlushing the entire koran at once? what a sin. I've found flushing two sheets at a time much more practical and eco-friendly. speaking of practical, Mr. Ghafoor, please, be more practical and take a few protesting students with you.
Posted by: jacques at May 15, 2005 04:03 PMI'd like to see the toilet that could flush a book, any book.
Ok, maybe I wouldn't.
Posted by: Jay at May 15, 2005 11:56 PMI remember great-grandmother's used old Sears and Roebuck's. Of course, it was an outhouse.
Posted by: interventor at May 16, 2005 01:24 AMNewsweek magazine said on Sunday it erred in a May 9 report that U.S. interrogators desecrated the Koran at Guantanamo Bay, and apologized to the victims of deadly Muslim protests sparked by the article.
Posted by: Doug at May 16, 2005 02:34 AMappologized?
How about paying restitution to the victims of the violence their inflamitory and incompetent reporting caused?
What about an "Operation Flush Newsweek"?
Posted by: Carine at May 16, 2005 09:00 AMRestitution for inflammatory reporting? Half the world's newspapers would shudder at the prospect of that precedent.
O.F.N. - I like it, but it's going to entail a lot of plunger work.
Posted by: Doug at May 16, 2005 11:12 AMTolerance is a one-way street. On another one of my blogs I had an article "Allah is Satan's name" with a link to a detailed article on the subject and my blog was hacked and all the files deleted. If you want some attention here's the link :)

Since I keep weekly backups I was back up and operational a few days later when I noticed.
I like the flush party idea though... wouldn't it be more fun to stand outside a newsweek building and burn the paper in their street and effigies of the editor? :D
