Saddam's dreams of the French Riviera
I guess by now you've all heard of France's former ambassador to the UN Jean-Bernard Mérimée being arrested in the process of the investigation of the UN oil-for-fraud program. One more testimony of what former French Foreign Minister, now French Prime Minister (and possibly 2007 presidential candidate) Dominique de Villepin referred to as "the universal principles which [France] has always defended".
(Thanks to all those who sent me links about this piece of news.)
Last week, we were also "learning", to quote the French journalist who reported the news on TV, that Saddam Hussein had invested some money in France. No kidding.
Guess who still possess two luxurious houses on the French Riviera?
Here is a transcript of the first one of the two videos available there. They come from TF1 TV.
TV anchorman: While Saddam Hussein's trial for crime against humanity is to start in two weeks, we learn that the former dictator owned two houses on the French Riviera, in Cannes and in Grasse.Journalist: In this Californie [California] district of Cannes, one can find some of the most beautiful houses of the French Riviera. On the billionaires' hill, as it is called, there is a street, the Cornice of Eartly Paradise, where houses are hidden behind giant doors and walls are riddled with security cameras. There, Saudi Arabia King Fadh's sister, Qatar's Emir or Osama Bin Laden's half-brother own sumptuous houses.
And here is Saddam Hussein's.
Nearly 6,460 sqft with a 1940 sqft annex. Estimated at 10 million euros, officially and since 1982, it is the property of a Liechtenchtein-based, real estate company. Saddam Hussein never entered this house. He never came in this other house either, in Grasse's heights, bought in 1990 to then former boss of the French secret services Alexandre de Maranche.
This house has been abandonned since the beginning of the Iraqi conflict. It became a squat.
Neighbor: We wrote, we signed petitions... Nobody cares.
Journalist: You never received any answer?
Neighbor: Never.
Journalist: Those two houses would then be part of Saddam Hussein's real estate assets. Saddam Hussein's fortune around the world is estimated by international experts to 8 billion dollars.

Posted by Blogmaster at October 14, 2005 09:31 PMI guess by now you've all heard of the 'mise en place' of Saddam Hussein by the brave and democratic USA's CIA.
In the name of freedom! jeez.
Like all those crappy dictators worldwide...

«Ask for a history book for Xmas to your Mom.»
My mom is dead but i have plenty of them, thanks you.
Thus my UPI link ( http://www.upi.com/inc/view.php?StoryID=20030410-070214-6557r ) is not for you a barely reliable source of information?
Maybe one day you will open your eyes and seek the truth, make your own research while staying objective. You will reach the same result: USA's CIA is an ugly monster, like btw barely every secret services worldwide.
But they are not all of this size, and they try usually to not pretend to fight for the good of mankind, freedom, democracy, while setting-up dictators via extreme-right plots against democratically elected people.
Saddam Hussein was a puppet of the CIA for decades, this is a shame but this is a truth, this is the History. Skeptics like you seems to have to await the declassification of this kind of informations, preferring to live in lies or denies... it's up to you.
