This just in: Frogs "holocaust" in France
No, this is not a post about the riots still going on in France. I'm talking about real French people, with - cough - real - cough - French problems.
Four men have appeared in court in Vesoul on Thursday [November 10] for selling several thousands of frogs to restaurants and individuals in the region, we learned from judicial sources. The four men, a father, his son and two of their friends were accused of having fished several thousands of batrachians in the "Mille-Etangs" ["A-Thousand-Ponds"] region (...) between 2002 and 2004.
Noticed by a guard of the French National Forest Office, they had been wiretapped from February to May 2004 before being the target of searches that resulted in the seizure of 65 frog keepnets and them being arrested.
The main defendant, Jacques Aubry, acknowledged on Thursday that he had fished between 8,500 and 10,000 frogs that he was selling between 23 and 32 euro cents each. . .
"Fishing frogs is better than burning cars", he said in order to defend himself. The other three defendants denied the accusations.
"It's not fishing, it's a holocaust!", answered Vesoul's DA substitute Lionel Pascal.
The president of the Bar, Mr. Lassus-Philippe, who defended the main defendant, claimed that "there would be no frog fishermen without restaurants, and no restaurants without consumers." "Hence,we are the ones responsible, due to our food behavior," he concluded.
The office of the public prosecutor asked for fines between 2,000 and 3,000 euros as a suspended sentence and the confiscation of the equipement. . .
Emphasis mine. Hat tip: Janinka.

That's it. They have gone totally insane. May Iran nuke them. And you dot not fish frogs DA substitute Lionel Pascal, they are batracians, not fishes you idiot.
Maybe we need to liberate the frogs from the frogs.
Posted by: Jay at November 13, 2005 07:57 PMSo what's the beef? Because there are riots in France the entire legal system is supposed to abandon its docket and do .. what exactly?
There were riots in Detroit in 1967 (actual for-real riots where hundreds of people died and entire city blocks were burned up), but the county court in rural Adams Couty, Wisconsin kept trying people for fishing without a license. And (horrors!) the Wisconsin state police had the gall to spend their time stopping speeders on the Interstate.
Ladies, life goes on everywhere, even in the midst of chaos. And what passes for riots in France is not even close to real chaos. Only children, narcissists (and apparently neocons) believe the world should stop revolving, eveyone should drop what the yare doing, and immediately focus all their attention on me, Me, MEEEE.
Take a deep breath, calm down, throttle the hysteria, and think for a few minutes before you post more stuff like your "frog trial" article.
The only folks you will attract are hormonal college boys like the "nuke france" guy.

If only... Boy it was hard during these times. Did you ever heard of "irony" pinhead ?
Posted by: Duff at November 14, 2005 03:24 PMBig Bill,
What's the problem with you? I tend to think going after people who tried to earn money by selling frogs they caught themselves is less of a priority than jailing the rioters. But as we've seen those past three weeks, priorities in France are a little mixed up. For example, it's more important to throw to prison a policeman who kicked one of these "youths" than keeping the "victim" of the policeman under key. Indeed, while the policeman was in prison, the young banlieusard, freed, started throwing stones again, at firefighters this time.
And what passes for riots in France is not even close to real chaos.
May I ask where you live?

Hello!? Will you calm down? This was supposed to be funny. Geez. Only Liberals can be that hysterical.

Uh-uh, I post whatever I want to post. If you didn't get that I was not asking the world to stop - and by the way, I won't stop for you, You, YOUUUU either - but rather heading for a good laugh, then you sure have a problem.
The main issue here with this "frog trial", as you call it, is that a DA substitute could call that a "holocaust". But if you still think I'm the one being hysterical, and you don't mind the killing for eating of a couple of thousands of frogs being called a "holocaust" (I don't eat frogs myself fyi, but I have other priorities than defending frogs, like defending my family) then I will assume you must be a member of such freaky, hateful organization as PETA.
The only folks you will attract are hormonal college boys like the "nuke france" guy.
Or obviously people like you.
Posted by: Carine at November 14, 2005 05:22 PMWell, PETA did the same thing:

Chicken farming is holocaust ? They have gone insane. Le gauchisme est une maladie mentale like I like to say.
I occasionally enjoy frog legs at a cajun restaraunt. Poor Big Bill must be off his lithium again. Even libs usually notice irony, but not full blown nutcases.
Posted by: interventor at November 14, 2005 08:25 PMWell, I'm a frog and never ate frogs, and will never. Escargots I like, I throw away the slug and eat the butter full of garlic. Then I go speak face to face with people I don't like.
Posted by: Duff at November 14, 2005 08:57 PMDUFF!!
"Then I go speak face to face to people I don't like." LOL! Now I know why the French eat snails! (Actualy, I LOVE escargot, especially when consumed at the Berghoff in Chicago.)
Pretty funny Carine, keep us posted on the frog filching fiends of France!!
Aren't the edible frogs in france an endangered species? The hunting season is short and I believe you can only catch for personal consumption. Sic PETA on their sorry asses! And order the big meaty bull frogs from a cajun farmer.
Posted by: interventor at November 15, 2005 02:59 PMVALERIE!
You don't eat escargots in Chicago, you eat pizza, polish food or steack. If you want to eat escargots, go to Burgundy. But then, you are not sure not to have your car burned when you leave the restaurant.
Posted by: Duff at November 15, 2005 04:04 PMThe big wine snail escargot grow in California. A friend of mine would pluck them from his tomato plants, let them feed on corn meal to clear out the dirt and them serve them with his tomatoes. Seemed a just fate.
Posted by: interventor at November 15, 2005 09:21 PMWell your irony would be fine and I realy laughed. But I've just read some quote which put me at the hedge...And I couldn't calm down. Comenting on the Bove's 4 month jail's verdict Pierre Taribo, the leader-writer of l'Est Républicain ( a regional paper) said:
"From now on in France, it was better to burn cars than to mow GMO".
How is it possible to write such stupidity and to pretend to work as a journalist? Did he think that he was bloging? When you think F.ex. that the ransack of one field costed 25 millions of €, the equivalent of one year research! The very problem is that we have nowhere to send Bové out of the country. Sorry...I forgot his father's origin: luxembourg.
For myself, I'm waiting for GM Frogs. I think that when you'll can eat it by Fouquet's it will be fashionable and then French will eat it with great pleasure.
Till that moment come, I'll have to convert myself to Islam (by force of course) or I'll got my green card!
Jean-Paul,
True journalism in France is dead, as far as I'm concerned. Of course it is stupid. But most journalists are left-leaning, hence would tend to agree with anti-progress, anti-GMO, anti-freedom, anti-American Bové.
What seems astounding to me is that more and more, France seems to be a land in which laws are neither respected, nor really enforced. Some French disagree with something (McDonald's, GMO, "the rich"): they go destroy what they disagree with, regardless of the law. So what, it's not their property? They "think" it's dangerous for "them". They "think" it's unfair to "them". They have a "good reason" for doing what they're doing. And most of the time, what are journalists and/or politicians doing? They tell us we have to "understand them". They are making the victims of those outlaws the very reason for their irresponsability.
Better get a green card, indeed. And quickly.

It's not only possible, it's the norm. Except three or four that are very good, they are all slugs (limaces en Francais, the stuff you find in escargots).
French media is just pure crap, excuse my French.
"The very problem is that we have nowhere to send Bové out of the country"
Well, maybe you can put some Genetically Modified marijuana in his pipe, a very potent one, then he will be gone for a while with Alice in Wonderland.
Posted by: Duff at November 17, 2005 05:40 PMYou're both right for journalists... I know... I was just saying like this. The worth is that they don't manipulate french, they just write what french want to hear!
Concerning the choice between Green Card and Green Flag, don't worry I've already made up my mind. Well if right now I was american citizen, I could deduct my tax of my pledge to WNCU (jazz radio). But I'm not yet. And the fact is that in France, I realy have no "prefered radio" to pledge for. So that last thing makes me willing to go west.
By the way, if anyone of you lives in States, could she or he explain to me how I can get a Reagan Revolution T.shirt on www.thoseshirts.com,I've written to them, and they don't sell abroad (i.e. to europe)? Thank You
The last I heard, France was being overrun by American frogs which threatened to destroy the ecology. Now they're prosecuting people for making thousands of frogs useful? What a conflicted society!

Yep, they are responsible for global warming an were sent by Karl Rove by Fedex. Damn American frogs!
Posted by: Duff at November 21, 2005 12:11 AMI just found this link via a random google search...and I have to disagree with the defendant. Burning cars is in fact BETTER than fishing frogs!! Heaps more fun!!
