NYC Letter: The Weblog Awards 2005

It is the end of the year and that means -- aside from a full calendar of Christmas parties and crippling morning-afters -- the blogosphere looks within and takes its measure. Voting is underway for the annual Weblog Awards, sponsored by Wizbang, and we would like to recommend to our readership some deserving candidates.

Although Wizbang has assembled many fine entries, we don't get out that much in the blogosphere and our recommendations are limited to those candidates we actually read with interest.

We always recommend voting the strongest choices. And where our friends are among the strong choices, we recommend our friends. And where several friends are in contention among the strong choices we recommend the winner of progressive coin tosses or the candidate who has sent us the nicest Christmas gift.

Best Blog: LGF, no ifs ands or buts. We also recommend the intelligent commentary at Michelle Malkin, but vote for LGF.

Best New Blog: Atlas Shrugs, smart and sassy. We are suckers for smart sassy women.

Best Conservative Blog: The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler, scil., nicedoggie.net, strong meat, not to all tastes, but Emperor Misha and crew are not about all tastes.

Best Media/Journalist Blog: OpinionJournal - Best Of The Web with James Taranto, one of our favorite longstanding daily reads, deserving of a better showing in this poll. The undeserving loser in our coin toss was Steyn Online, whose top-notch wicked commentary belies the notion that there are only nice Canadians not intelligent ones. A not-too-distant-but-decidedly-third choice is James Lileks The Bleat, which we like for its many special features (e.g., The Institute of Official Cheer, The Flotsam Project), special as in plain odd.

Best Humor/Comics Blog: Several friends among the contenders and a hard call, but drinking pal David Burge of Iowahawk gets the nod for his thoughtful gift of an A&N duffle bag stuffed with Jacksons and a pre-viewed VHS of Billy Friedkin's To Live And Die In L.A., nice touch that. Scrappleface, Day By Day, and Cox & Forkum do not need the miniscule edge of our endorsement. For those unfamiliar with Achewood, we recommend the daily drive-by.

Best UK Blog: Samizdata

Best European Blog (non-UK): ¡No Pasarán!, no ifs ands or buts. ¡NP! is a successful mix of vitriol, scorn, and thoughtful commentary -- and an important friend to both E-Nough! and Pave France. We also recommend the excellent Davids Medienkritik, but vote for ¡NP!

Best of the Top 250 Blogs: The Belmont Club

Every time you vote for a recommended candidate -- you are allowed to vote in each category once every 24 hours -- you confuse a liberal. Huh? Oh. What we mean to say is you confuse a liberal beyond his native contented confused state. You introduce forbidden doubt, an interior sigh of perplexion, the edge crumbling of sniffy superiority -- and worse! -- Dear Great Mother Goddess Gaea! You challenge liberal views based on celebrity allegiances not solid arguments. Use your vote for good. Stir things up. Confuse a liberal.

NOTES: Polls require Macromedia Flash version 7 (or higher), which will automatically install if you do not have it. Polls close December 15, 2005. You may vote once every 24 hours in each poll.

Damian,
Now, now, don't go scaring people off Misha and the Rotties. They're just a bunch of lovable pups. That they have teeth that can chew through steel, a minor point.

And a blog that should be mentioned, but read only if you prefer your humor very, very dry--Damian's own Pave France. Yes, the Pave France in the blogroll.

Our modest New Yorker (yes, such a thing is possible) deserves a read.
