"Stupid Girl" writes a letter to President Bush
This is too funny. Although I haven't succeeded in finding the lyrics, I do believe I can guess what the song is about.
"When I started, I had not a thought in my head," Pink said.
How come?
"I was reading The New York Times every day. . .
Ahhhhh.....
. . .and I was really depressed. 'I suck, no one likes me, I have nothing to say.' Forty-five songs later, they make me stop writing songs."
Typical NYT's reader?
The '60s touch is also felt on Pink's most political song yet, "Dear Mr. President," an open letter to George W. Bush. "I hope the president is proud of the fact that we live in a country where we can do things like that, where we can have dissent, talk, communicate and share our opinions," she said.
He surely is. Certainly more than all the singers of the world combined. Well, it's still nice to know you do realize you have this free-dom that the Iraqis now have, too, to a certain degree.
"I also think it's pretty narcissistic to think that one of my songs will be heard by the president of the United States," she laughed, "but hey, that would be really cool."
And that's GWB's first mission for the New Year. Before the War on Terror. Before anything else. Listen to Pink's song and make it "cool" for her.
Pink describes the album as having a "spectrum of light and color." In other words, it's not as dark as it sounds. Yes, there are songs that are angry ("Dear Mr. President"), but she hopes it promotes change.
Heal the world - Make it a better place...
Yes, there are songs that are "morbid and miserable," but there are also songs that are "very happy."
And "morbid and miserable" would make it for a personal album. Thank you very much.
"That's how I live my life. I'm a walking conflict," she laughed. "I guess I turned 25 and sort of woke up. Before, I think, I thought I knew everything and now I realize I have so much left to learn. I just love being here. I love pushing buttons. I love the process of growing up. When you're a teenager, there are moments that you want to die. But you get past that, and then every moment is like, 'I want to live! I have so much to do! I'm not dead! I'm here.' "
Well, grow up then.

Posted by: interventor at January 5, 2006 01:22 PMWell, if she wants to really do something then perhaps she should sign up to do a USO show....I'm sure a real female rocker, like Joan Jett, could show her how.
Posted by: andy at January 6, 2006 11:13 AMShe may not be dead, but her career sure is.
Posted by: Yankee Expat In Japan at January 7, 2006 12:05 AMPink does have some good songs, and when I heard about this it made me think differently. I hate it that all these people are making President Bush out to be the bad guy and to make it seem like he's an idiot. When really, he is just trying to do what is best for the country. Would he have been re-elected if people thought he was doing a bad job. I don't know...this world has changed so much and from my 15 year old perspective, I think that it has changed for the worse. Now a days its pretty sad when you're the only student sitting in World Studies, during the election time, voting for what you think is right, not what your parents say about the canidate. This is what I think is wrong...people of the United States are falling into a trap where they think it is cool to be against the right values. These thoughts are being put into their heads by singers like "Pink" and other people. I'm sorry this is so long, but I think people need to hear some of it and think about it. Thank YOu
Posted by: Lindsay at January 8, 2006 03:04 AMLindsay,
Good for you on making up your own mind. Unfortunately, claiming your opponent is dumb is an old lefty argument. Reagan was the amiable dunce, never mind he was governor of California and reclaimed her financially. Goldwater was dumb, dangerous and would expand the war in Viet Nam. Eisenhower was an amiable grandfather, but only good at golf. Never mind that he was Supreme Commander for the Allied invasion of Europe. If all these are so dumb, the opponents must really be stupid.

Not just the only student...you must include faculty in this as well.
I saw a report in Washington Post about faculty at Univ. of Maryland. I don’t have exact figure, but over 90% of faculty gave to Kerry during the election. My, my, Lindsay, keep up the good work…we will need you in the future!
I SAW THE "STUpID GIRL" VIDEO AND NOW I READ THIS, AND I THINK THAT IS COOL TO WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD AND I THINK SHE CAN DO IT, I HOpE EVERYONE CAN LISTEN TO STUpID GIRL BECAUSE SO MANY pEOpLE WAS ACTING LIKE THAT AND pAINT YOUR LIFE pINK!ˇ
Posted by: ICN at February 2, 2006 01:36 AMICN,
Change the world? You're not going to "change the world" with a song. Criticism is easy. Doing something is, well, a whole other world.
Here at E-nough!, we are for action, that is why we supported the Liberation of Iraq. Let me guess... you probably didn't. But you dream your life in pink.
Remember to thank the troops for painting your life pink, for they are those making is possible
Posted by: Carine at February 3, 2006 12:27 AMICN,
hm so i wonder if the troops are painting everyone else's life pink. When They kill innocent people who have families who they love just as much as we love our families. Im not saying that all troops purposely do this but when the military is teaching them to hate iraqi's and they make the words "fuck iraq" on their ships (very mature and shows we have sooo much respect for the nations that we go to war with) i dont think our troops are painting ANYONES life pink, except for the president of course. Ther is never one reason to go to war, its never about defending our country its never about trying to help other countries out. its always linked to money. So if thats what people like "yankee expat in japan" thinks is the right thing to do, then im aaaaall for it. Yankee, stop sugar-coating our world and making assumptions.Going to war is NEVER the right thing to do. Defend bush all you want but that doesnt make him a good president.
Alaska,
Visibly, here, you have a comprehension problem -- notably regarding what people posted here, who posted what and on what blog you're commenting.
So I'll assume you have a little homework to do regarding what is actually -- and by actually I mean not what is invented in newspapers like the NYT or Le Monde -- going on in Iraq.
Also remember the troops you seem to so despised are making it possible for you to bash them. It's not "very mature and shows [you] have sooo much respect for" them.
And btw, don't mix everything up: there's a difference between terrorists (for which you seem to ask us to respect) and Iraqis (you seem to despise since denying them the Iraq "war" #2 would have meant keeping them in slavery.)
Posted by: Carine at February 3, 2006 08:13 PMwell i think pink should have the right to say what she wants to say because it is one of her freedoms but the thing that lindsay said about that if he was such a bad person why was he re-electd becaise who wants to switch presidents in the middle of a war that is the only reason bush is still the president becasue of the war i think that was a stupid fact to point out because if there was no war then bush wouldn't have gotten re-elected and pinks just trying to show how she feels about the whole stitaution at least she is standing up for what she believes in instead of pretending that everything bush does is so cool
Posted by: anon at February 11, 2006 04:02 PMAnon,
And I also do have the right to disagree with her and to say it. Thankyouverymuch.
Posted by: Carine at February 12, 2006 08:28 PMLindsey, rather than telling people to go against the right values because it's 'cool' I think the message shes trying to out accross is that you shouldn't do something because all the 'cool' people do it, that you should have the courage and conviction to stand for your own principles, and that what is truely 'cool' is the person who forms their own opinion of something, rather than being railroaded into one by the opinions of others.
And lets not forget, this is only music after all - It's supposed to be for people to enjoy!
I got on this website to see what others said about her new album. I just wanted to see what the majority would say, but I couldn't help to see what ICN wrote. That is fucked up! I'm a military brat. My father was in the army for 22 years. He was field artilery. He went to Bosnia, Korea, and Desert Storm. Did you live a life like that? Have you been over there to see what's going on? Soldiers are not taught to hate anybody. Where did you hear that? My husbad is in the airforce, he's not taught to hate anyone. When he returned fro, Iraq you wouldn't believe the stories he told. The media will only air things "they" want you to see. Nothing positive and nothing to show what the soldiers are doing. So...you are going to let a news channel persuade your thought process over a 2 minute segment? If it wasn't for our troops you wouldn't even have the right to protest like you do. Then again, you do have the right. Protest your opinion, use the hell out of it, that's what America is about. My husbad is getting shot at just so you can have that right. Being for or against war is of course up to you, but its your moral obligation to at least support the troops, not bash them. Has MTV, CNN, or any other bullshit ass news interviewed military children, teenagers, wives, no. I lived on military bases my whole life, especially the largest post, Ft. Hood. Never saw a news reporter come to my school or any of the highschools, watching their fathers wave at their kids from a sattelite. Some kids are handed awards becuase their father has died. Where are the news reporters? They like to interview people who have no experience with the military and what its all about. The media has there own agenda and well...it works. I just had to stand up for my father, husband, friends, and well my life. You have no clue of what is really going on. Its sad that you will allow a newspaper and the fucking media out of all things persuade you.
Posted by: Elaine at April 7, 2006 03:09 AMElaine,
I don't want to be mean to Pink's fans but I do not believe they're very mature. Pink isn't either. Her song "Mr. President" is preposterous.
They have no idea whatsoever that American troops fighting around the world are protecting them and allowing them to shout their silliness to the world. This is sad.
Posted by: Carine at April 7, 2006 09:24 PMI think this song of Pink's is spot on! Good for her. I wish they would play it on the radio 24-7. Maybe people blame Bush because he IS responsbible. He's an uncaring person who is doing what's best for Bush not for the country.
Posted by: Vicky at April 9, 2006 02:58 AMThere's certainly a reason why her first, nex single is titled "Stupid Girl" indeed.
Now, Vicky, why don't you try to think if it's possible for you and come up with an argument instead of a lyric from one stupid girl?
Posted by: Carine at April 9, 2006 10:20 AMI'm not a fan of Pink, or the song, BUT I don't see how this song is offensive to the "troops". Thinking that soldiers are dying for an unjust cause in the name of the US is not anti-military, it is actually cherishing the gift that the military gives us (their lives)- and not wanting it to be carelessly spent. Could someone respond and explain the offense taken?
I am assuming that most of readers of this site are more on the right side of the road than the left. Just a few comments to those of you who think that the "right" is standing up for the morals of the US. The problem with that thinking is the morals that are being held up are those of radical Christians- not ALL of the tax paying citizens. This country was not founded on religion and IS founded on a separation of church and state.
What this means is YOU (your individual self) can CHOOSE to NOT have an abortion, you can CHOOSE to pay (with your own money) to send your child to a private shcool and not expect reimbursement, you can CHOOSE your own moral path. You should not (in the name of "Christian morals") criminalize those who do not share your values.
Abortion, gay marriage, etc. If you are offended DON"T have an abortion, DON'T marry a person of the same sex.
That being said, GWBush has used his position to make his friends rich at the expense of our soldiers (lives) and Iraqi innocents when there really were no "weapons of mass destruction". He has destroyed the environment (for those "religious" people, how can you justify that?- isn't our planet a "gift from God?"), destroyed our foreign relationships, f-d up the entire Katrina situation, and taken us all on a ride on HIS "moral highroad." Not to mention his evil minions (Carl Rove- how evil and unpatriotic to disclose the name of an American spy). The list here goes on and on for the right, Delay, Gingrich (lefties are not innocent, but we don't tote our moral highness around).
All is not right with the "right".
How much more failure of his is needed before people STOP excusing him!
Posted by: very liberal at April 12, 2006 09:35 PMI don't think this song really bashes the troops in Iraq. For one thing, the poster of the blog hasn't even read the lyrics. It's actually not all about the war. Sure, some of it is about the war, but it doesn't say our troops are made to hate anyone. It just... sort of sympathizes with the Iraqis hurt by the war. And then of course, there's a whole part of the song about Bush's daughters. Hell, this song is about way more than the war on Iraq. Try listening to it before you bash it. It's about people whose lives are destroyed because of war, it's about Katrina, it's about poverty, and it's about fucking gay rights. Do you think gay rights is shouting silliness at the world? That's my rights we're talking about, my right to marry, to fight in the very army you're so proud of. Do you know what it's like to be a teenage girl growing up and listening to other girls dream about having a wedding some day, and knowing you might never be able to have your own wedding? Pink is standing up for us. Let's not make this song entirely about a war it's not entirely dedicated to. Yes, some of it is about the war, but not a whole lot. It's just about world issues in general.
On a side note, don't get me wrong- I do respect the American soldiers. It's Bush I have a problem with. Those soldiers are doing everything they can, and they deserve respect for that, no matter what opinions we have of the man commanding them.
Posted by: Just Some Kid at April 24, 2006 10:36 PMWell, I like pink. the color, and the person. I do like Bush, too. Nobody will change either of those things. But I do think that Pink is sending a good message, in "Stupid Girls" and even "Dear Mr. President". I think it's right to voice your opinion and no matter what some people say you CAN change the world with a song. And WHO says PREPOSTEROUS?? wow.
Posted by: Bee at May 1, 2006 09:16 PMI do not try and side with Pink, nor against her, but I do believe that people's preference of the song is based mostly on their political affiliation. If that is true, then this whole argument is meaningless, because the large political parties and their beliefs often contrast each other.
I know some people will be angry about my viewpoint on this type of affiliation, but I will be saying what I think is the truth. True, people voted for Bush's re-election because the War on Terror was a big thing back then, but that was largely because we had just been attacked by terrorists and we wanted revenge. The idea of the War on Terror is good, yet the methods which are being used to carry it out, are bad, as we do not even know how much longer it will last and how many more people will die. This is what i believe about the War on Terror issue with this song, which I do not exactly see as being a big connection from the song (at least not as a big deal as some people are making it to be).
We know that every president is not perfect, and that there are many flaws in their actions and what they do. In the present, President Bush just happens to be doing things that upset people ( not necessarily a majority or a minority of the United States).
Again, I think it depends on whether or not you like George W. Bush, and your political affliation.
