Happy birthday America
How many internation days of everything and just about anything (earth day, non-smoking day, refusing poverty day) have we got? (you can actually check here) How many meaningful ones?
As far as I'm concerned, the Fourth of July is not only the birthday of America, the world's greatest opportunity for liberty to spread around the world, it is also the birthday of freedom.
Happy birthday America, happy birthday liberty.

I'm glad to announce that on the occasion of America's 230th birthday, Paris received the gift of a statue of Thomas Jefferson. It is on the quai Anatole France, not far from the Musée d'Orsay and, funnily enough a block from the Socialist Party HQ.

A tribute to Thomas Jefferson - President of the United States of America 1801-1809 - Ambassador in Paris 1785-1789 -- Offered to the city of Paris in memory of Daniel Wildenstein (1917-2001) Member of the institute by his sons and by the Florence Gould Foundation - July 2006
Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe called Jefferson a "universal man ... inspired by the ideas of the Enlightenment." He called the third U.S. president "a great man, a great Parisian."
Yes, Delanoë is the Paris Mayor who made Mumia Abu Jamal Honorary Parisian and who raised his left fist to yell "Mumia is a Parisian!".
Posted by Carine at July 4, 2006 10:00 PMMaybe the statue will come to life and run for president in 2007.
After all, if he's Parisian, he's eligible.
Happy Fourth to one and all!
You need to be alive to run for office in France? I'm impressed. A few years back the deceased governor of Missouri (I think Missouri) was on the Democrat ticket and remained the front runner until his wife stepped up.
