One person commits suicide at work everyday in France
Working kills? Apparently, in France.
Renault, EDF... many companies have employees committing suicide.(...)
ONE EVERY DAY! That's the figure regarding suicides linked to work in France. The figure was revealed by Christian Larose, VP of the Economic and Social Council and a unionist in the textile industry. "In France, there are 300 to 400 deaths by suicide every year directly linked to work conditions. The figure is increasing. But I believe it is under-estimated," he explains. Michel Debout, the president of the National Union for the Prevention of Suicide agrees: "We're faced with a serious and more and more worrying phenomenon, linked to the harshness of the world of work and its precariousness. It's true on every level, but particularly for executives", he adds. Altogether, there is a total of 10,000 persons committing suicide in France, and 140,000 suicide attempts.

According to Christian Larose, the main cause is to be found in the "resignation" of some employees, faced with the harshness of layoffs. "For fear of losing their job, people accept, more than before, psychological pressure and insults. They are told to smile to sell themselves better but they can't manage to do it. Hence they tell themselves they are the origin of the problem and that's when they start to fall."

According to a WHO report, France is the third nation with more "depressions linked to work", behind Ukraine and the United States.
The story doesn't tell if the unemployed are prone to suicide too. I guess they're supposed to have to handle less stress...
