Liberty is risky, let's ban it for the common good
There is something that sickens me a little more each day, whether in France or elsewhere (although in France it has become a daily problem): people I don't know who allow themselves to think and act on my behalf/for my own good/***insert your favorite socialist excuse here***.
To these people who think they are authorized to think and decide for me: just because you can't manage freedom, responsibility, taking a risk, bear the consequences, make choices, etc., doesn't mean that I can't or am unwilling to. Just STOP minding MY business. Mind yours and guess what? I don't need to know what you think I should do/would be best for me. I.DON'T.CARE. And I don't want your thinking-about-what's-best-for-everyone having anything to do with me.
French organization Famille de France (Families of France) has decided to sue ISPs to force them to ban Second Life. The reason?
[Second Life] exposes young people to pornography, pedophilia and gambling games. They demand that ISPs block the access [to Second Life]".
You read correctly. They ask that all people living in France, with an access to the Internet, be denied the access to Second Life.
I am not a member of Second Life. I've never been really interested in it, my life is interesting enough. But actually, the Internet and... life "expose young people to pornography, pedophilia and gambling games" too. Should we ban the Internet too? Life? Is that the organization's next plan of action?
Can't the parents monitor their children use of the Internet? Do we need to rely on the use of force? Apparently we have because
[Internet] access filters aren't always useful, families don't always know that filters exist . . . . and since filters aren't always helpful, it's not technically easy to use, the organization acknowledges, Families of France purely and simply asks for the ban of the access.
Life ain't always easy. You can risk your life everyday. Because some people don't know how to protect themselves, because it's difficult to learn how to protect yourself, some people don't always know how, and it's not always helpful... should going outside be "purely and simply" banned?
This is beyond ridicule.
Families of France claims that if Second Life was only about adults, they wouldn't mind. But, hey, I'm not responsible for your children, people (although I am forced to pay taxes for some of them). Your children are your responsibility. Just because you decided to have children in today's "horrible, terrible world" is not a reason for imposing a child's conduct on my life or on any adult's life.
Some people decide not to have children precisely because they do not want the responsibility. Life is not just about adults either, yet adults are supposed to act responsibly.
The Supa Dupa Welfare Nanny State is already pretending to want us to stop smoking "for our own good" while taxing us to death on tobacco (the State isn't exactly a not-for-profittheft organization), now imposing a mandatory "public health" message on commercials for food, such as "try not to eat between meals" or "try not to eat too fat or too much sugar" or "for your health, eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day" or "for your health, practice sports regularly", why shouldn't we ask Nanny to monitor our access to the Internet?
C,
Before the Internet there was no such thing as pornography.
Children had no idea of or desire for sex until their wedding night. And then only with the lights out.
Of course I trust sel-appointed organizations to make social policy on the difficulties of living yours and my life. This is what they do for a living while we are too busy working.
In this case the better solution might be just to turn our children over to Famille de France to properly raise them, as parents -- certainly first-time parents -- have neither the experience to parent nor the astute insights of professional organizations that advise on parenting.
Leave the important stuff to professionals. That's just common sense. For example who is more competent to decide on global warming, you or a professional activist who has seen Al Gore's Academy award-winning movie several times and skimmed his non-award-winning book?
Also, when will some socially aware organization get around to banning television? Or at the very least be given charge of programming? Somebody must know better than us what we want to watch. And why do libraries have so many different books? Some self-appointed committee should be able to winnow the titles down to four or five good detective novels and celebrity diet cookbooks.
The goal should be to remove the confusing choices from our lives.

You shouldn't try to do anything at all, because if it were ok for you to do something, then you would already be told to do it. There are Experts and Authorities who know more about all of that kind of thing than you ever will, so listen to them. And stop your complaining - they'll let you know as soon as you have something to complain about.
