LANG DEMANDE DÉMISSION DU PS: «C'EST GROTESQUE»

One of those funny French headlines. The above quote is not from Jack Lang, but from Benoît Hamon, Socialist spokesman and MEP, characterizing M. Lang's call for the collective resignation of the PS leadership. Blood on the walls. Blood everywhere. The opposition provides its own opposition.

SOCIALIST QUITS PARTY LEADERSHIP
AFTER SARKOZY JOB OFFER

PARIS, July 11, 2007 (AFP) - Senior French Socialist Jack Lang said Wednesday he was quitting the party leadership after being asked by rightwing President Nicolas Sarkozy to take part in a high-profile reform commission.

Lang, a former culture minister and one of France's most popular politicians, is the latest target of Sarkozy's policy of "openness" which has sparked alarm and anger in the plundered ranks of the Socialist Party.

... The governing body of the party had said on Tuesday it would suspend from the leadership any person who participated in Sarkozy's planned commission on reforming the institutions of government.

Nothing like desperate measures to inspire confidence. Sure to hold things together. Here is the question Frank should be asking, Why do prominent Socialists find Sarko's government more attractive than Frank's Parti Socialiste?

One of many plausible answers, because Sarko's government has a dynamic and Frank's PS has not.
