Pave: Envoyée par Dieu

Le jour 131 de Sarko

It is Sunday in France. Let us pray.

Pardonnez-leur car ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font.

[Forgive them for they know not what they do.]

No, that is not the Christ, the Son of God, speaking. That is the newly invented St. Ségo stooping to forgive her Socialist critics, who are legion (and this and this).

Of course you might be forgiven also if you have mistaken St. Ségo for a political hack, who would say anything, who would embrace anyone, who would do anything, who would threaten friends, who would tear apart the very Republic itself to get elected.

Yes. [Pause.] Apparently, you too are forgiven. Such is her extravagant munificence.

J'ai l'impression en lisant tous ces ouvrages que si j'étais Jeanne d'Arc, j'aurais déjà été brûlée vive. Heureusement que nous ne sommes plus à cette époque.

[I have the impression reading all these things that if I were Joan of Arc, I would already have been burned alive. Fortunately those times are past.]

also known as

la candidate qui était la moins capable de gagner,

Like Joan of Arc, St. Ségo believes herself sent by God -- though not to reclaim France, but for the more impossible mission of smoothing down quarreling Socialists.

We don't really believe this. [Pause.] And (we are pretty sure) neither does Ségo. Until now she has evinced no spiritual connection* to Jeanne d'Arc. No. The Maid of Orleans is simply an exploitable metaphor to solicit public sympathy for the politically beset and politically bumbling Ségo.

* During the 1e tour, Ségo claimed Olympe de Gouges as her inspiration. Jean-Marie Le Pen claimed Jeanne d'Arc.
