France controlled Morocco from March 30, 1912 under the Treaty of Fez until Moroccan independence 44 years later on November 6, 1956. During that time Morrocans came under the influence of enlightened Republican values.

It is not impossible to construe a positive message to the above statue. Humble work is no less dignified, no less a calling than running for president. The Élysée no more elevated than the hearth. However, in conjunction with its intended universal commemorative function, it is hard to mistake the Qu'ranic propriety of women as God-given domestics being celebrated here.
