And here are the new numbers: original report 372 torchings; recount 878 torchings. That's a differential of 506 torchings, a margin of error of 136%+, topping last year's 72% MOE.

Jeudi, le ministère de l'Intérieur a dû revoir ses chiffres à la hausse après la révélation de nouveaux chiffres par Europe 1. Le nouveau bilan fait désormais état de 878 véhicules brûlés, contre les 372 avancés le mardi 1er janvier par la Direction générale de la police nationale (DGPN), dont le bilan avait été «arrêté à 6h».

Hhmmm. Clearly the DGPN has hit on a winning policy. This could be improved by stopping its count even earlier -- say, 12:01 AM, when most casseurs are still emptying the beer bottles in which to ration their petrol.

La DGPN avait alors fait valoir une baisse de «6,72%» par rapport à la Saint-Sylvestre précédente où «397» voitures avaient été incendiées. La DGPN s'est ensuite systématiquement refusée à compléter son bilan, estimant que ce ne serait «pas significatif».
