16 janvier 2008 (20minutes.fr) - En novembre 2007 dans une interview donnée au « Parisien », Christine Lagarde avait encouragé les Français à pratiquer le vélo, la marche ou les transports publics pour compenser l’envolée des prix pétroliers. « Les transports en commun sont considérés en France comme de grande qualité », avait-elle déclaré. « Je suis prête à donner l’exemple ». Cette idée avait suscité une réflexion à François Hollande:

Marie-Antoinette, lorsqu'on lui demandait du pain parce que le pays était affamé, disait "il n'y a pas de pain, qu'on leur donne de la brioche". Eh bien maintenant il n'y a pas de carburant, "qu'on leur donne du vélo".

Réponse de la ministre « Loin de moi l'idée de rouler en carrosse ».

Marie Antoinette, when asked for bread because the country was starving, said 'there is no bread, let's give them brioche'. Ah well, now there is no fuel, 'let's give them the bicycle'.

For a clever smear to be effective, the first order of business is to be clever. Next, it should smear.

First, Dutch relies on a discredited quote** and its recieved misconstruction, the original intention of the quote being quite the opposite. This rather undercuts the cleverness. Next, a man of the people, ( « Je n'aime pas les riches ! »***) he thinks to smear the minister by association with an insensitive profligate woman, who, as it turns out, was neither the one nor particularly the other. This rather undercuts the smear.

Lastly, when delivering a mock or a sting, make sure the target doesn't have the last laugh. And never, at all costs, as here, the better laugh.
