Georges Frêche is a President of both the Région Languedoc-Roussillon and the Communauté d'Agglomération de Montpellier. He is said by some to be a visionary. Alas, he is not a 20/20 visonary but more a 20/100 visionary, or, metrically, a 6/30 visionary. For example, a member of longstanding in the Parti Socilaiste, he was expelled last year following this remark, among others, about the 2006 Les Bleus:

Dans cette équipe, il y a neuf blacks sur onze. La normalité serait qu'il y en ait trois ou quatre. Ce serait le reflet de la société. Mais, là, s'il y en a autant, c'est parce que les blancs sont nuls. J'ai honte pour ce pays. Bientôt, il y aura onze blacks. Quand je vois certaines équipes de foot, ça me fait de la peine.

[On this team, there are 9 blacks out of 11. The normal number would be three or four. This would reflect [French] society. But if there are so many, it is because Whites are lame. I'm ashamed for this country. Soon, there will be eleven blacks. When I see certain football teams, it makes me sad.]

17 janvier 2008 (20minutes.fr) - Le président de la région Languedoc-Roussillon, Georges Frêche (ex-PS), est "séduit" par l'idée d'ériger à Montpellier une statue de Lénine, a-t-il déclaré en réaction à des informations de presse.

"L'installation de cette statue à Montpellier est une idée parmi mille autres" qui "me séduit", a affirmé M. Frêche dans un communiqué mercredi, tout en ajoutant que la "concrétisation" de cette idée "en est une autre". Selon le quotidien Midi Libre, qui a révélé l'information mercredi, M. Frêche compte acheter et acheminer à Montpellier une statue de Lénine de 7 tonnes mise en vente à Seattle (nord-ouest des Etats-Unis), pour un prix situé entre 150.000 et 250.000 dollars (102.333 à 170.555 euros). M. Frêche :

A l'heure où je finalise un accord décisif avec le gouvernement pour obtenir la ligne à grande vitesse entre Montpellier et Perpignan, on préfère disserter sur une statue de Lénine... Voilà bien, une nouvelle fois, un signe de notre temps où le futile l'emporte sur l'utile.

[The president of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, George Frêche (ex-PS), "is captivated" by the idea of erecting a statue of Lenin in Montpellier, he said in response to news reports.

"The installation of this statue in Montpellier is one idea among a thousand others" which "intrigues me", Mr. Frêche affirmed in an official statement Wednesday, while adding that the "realization" of the idea "is something else". According to the daily Midi Libre, which made the revelations Wednesday, Mr. Frêche intends to buy and ship to Montpellier a 7-ton statue of Lenin on sale in Seattle, Washington,* for a price somewhere between USD $150,000 and USD $250,000 dollars (€102,333 to €170,555). M. Frêche:

At the moment when I complete a final agreement with the government for a high speed line between Montpellier and Perpignan, one prefers to discuss a statue of Lenin... Ah well, once again, a sign of our times when the unimportant sweeps away the worthy.]

We stop to check the list of one thousand French priorities, those things that need to be done to make France a more productive, more prosperous, more happy place. [We quickly run our finger down the list.] Sure enough! Here it is. Item N°1,000. "Install over-priced statue of Lenin in Montpellier. Invite delegates from Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, etc. to unveiling."

And why Mr. Lenin? M. Frêche:

Sans la révolution d'Octobre, il n'y aurait pas eu la décolonisation.

[Without the October Revolution, there would have been no decolonization.]

Hhmmm. Not an obvious connection. French colonialism muddled along for some 40+ years undinted by the October Revolution. M. Frêche, a strict anti-colonialist, only two years ago had harsh words for former French colonials who hadn't properly harkened to the October Revolution:

Les harkis** ont vocation à être cocus jusqu'à la fin des temps. ... Vous êtes des sous-hommes ! Vous n'avez aucun honneur !

[The harkis** will be cuckolds till the end of time. ... You are subhumans! You have no honor!]

Sadly, after France abandoned them, the harkis had little left but their honor.

** Harki = Algerian Muslims who supported France in the Algerian War of Independence. After the war, they were slaughtered -- savagely and wholesale -- by the triumphant FLN (Front de Libération Nationale). The French government turned its back to them, General De Gaulle famously remarking to a harki spokesman: Eh bien! vous souffrirez. [Well then -- you will suffer.] And so they did.
