Pave: The Beholden Forget
Le jour 388 de Sarko
Today is the 64th anniversary of D-Day, the enormous assault -- logistical, tactical, strategic -- on Normandy, opening the Allied Western Front and the engine behind the liberation of France.
We found nothing on the Élysée site commemorating this day. The most recent communiqué of the president was Hommage à M. Yves Saint Laurent. Nothing in the Élysée's daily e-mail.
Likewise there was nothing in evidence commemorating D-Day on the Embassy of France in Washington site and nothing in the embassy's daily e-mail.
There was nothing on the Le Monde home page about D-Day. It's lead editorial was Guantanamo, hélas ! [Gitmo, More's The Pity!], decrying American justice afforded confessed terrorists.
Le Figaro had nothing on D-Day, but thought this story à la une, Adolf Hitler revient à Berlin, mais en cire [Adolph Hitler Returns To Berlin, But In Wax]. Its lead editorials were on French unemployment and the ticketing of snails on the SNCF.
[Long pause. Very long pause.]
You're welcome, France.

D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944
3,000 Dead + 6,000 Casualties, Over Half Of Which Were Americans,
In France, For France -- Ouais, Ouais
The poster text reads (top to bottom):
DU GOUVERNEMENT FRANÇAIS EN ASSOCIATION
AVEC LE PEUPLE DE LA FRANCEOUAIS, OUAIS
[FROM THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT IN ASSOCIATION
WITH THE PEOPLE OF FRANCEYEAH, YEAH]
[A Grateful Nation Commemorates Her Liberation
What has America done for France recently?]
(Dire en aparté) ... OK ... bon, ça va ... merci
[(Under the breath) ...OK...sure...thanks]
[America? Don't call us, we'll call you.]
We began this poster back in 2004 for the 60th anniversary of D-Day. We were angry at France. Four years later we are not so angry, but it is unlikely France will ever be restored to our affections.
We do not wait on French gratitude -- dream on -- but France's smallness of spirit bespeaks her plodding diminution.

*Our special thanks to friends, The Dissident Frogman and ¡No Pasarán!, for their remembrances.

Posted by: Zoof at June 7, 2008 12:41 AMOf course, we do not ask for M. Zoof's thanks. We have no claim on it.
But so occupied with his insult, M. Zoof completely forgets a thank you -- if not to America, for we imagine that is a bitter pill for M. Zoof -- to the Allied forces who shed their blood in the liberation of his country.
M. Zoof provides a link to others' thanks, but where is M. Zoof's?
M. Zoof gives a small Q.E.D. in his small way of France's smallness of spirit.

God bless America!
Une portion de frites gratuites, en souvenir !

In case anyone missed M. Zoof's cloaked disdain for America, he returns to demonstrate his open contempt. Just so everyone is absolutely clear about M. Zoof's spleen.
All this in the context of a remembrance of the blood and treasure of others spent on France's behalf so that M. Zoof today can comfortably insult from a France snug under the protection of NATO, protection which has allowed successive French governments to dispense government candy at the expense of France's own defense.
M. Zoof despises those who saved his country from the ignominy it brought on itself. He is bitter. He is tetchy. He is a donkey.

Posted by: Zoof at June 7, 2008 10:09 PMPoor M. Zoof. Neither clever, nor bright. He obviously craves attention and is willing to make an ass of himself to get it.

Posted by: Damian at June 7, 2008 11:27 PMPauvre Zoof...
