CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa October 4, 2007 (ABC News) - ABC reporter to Mr. Obama:

You don't have the American flag pin on. Is that a fashion statement?

Mr. Obama:

You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a pin. Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq War, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest.

On second thought... You know, the truth is not wearing that pin on my chest may hurt me among the bitter, gun-clinging, Bible-clutching, anti-immigrant antipathists in the Pennsylvania primary.

OBAMA DONS A LAPEL PIN
WITH POLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE

WARREN, Michigan May 15, 2008 (IHT) - It showed up Monday, right there on his lapel, as he addressed veterans in West Virginia: a flag pin.

There it was again Tuesday, in Missouri, as he spoke to workers at a garment factory. And it was there Wednesday as he toured a Chrysler plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, near here in the Detroit suburbs.

[Obama's aides] have insisted during these rare three days of pin wearing - the first consecutive days he has worn the pin in the campaign - that it is just fashion happenstance.

Mr. Obama when he was asked about the pin Monday, the first day he had donned it since a veteran handed him one in April in Pennsylvania:

Sometimes I wear it, sometimes I don't.

So, you know, sometimes he shows the true patriotism of a naked lapel and sometimes he clutters that same lapel with substitute patriotism. It's a "fashion happenstance". [Pause.] It depends on his valet.
