NYC Letter: We're Not Saying, We're Just Saying
Day 84 of CHOPE
There is coincidence. And then there is synthetic irony.
First, Ermanno Furlanis, a computer expert and part-time chef at the Pizza Institute in northern Italy, recounts his adventures as a fetched pizza chef.
I MADE PIZZA FOR KIM JONG-IL
Part 3*: The Great Man Eats
August 18, 2001 (Asia Times) - I had just finished preparing my pizzas when I noticed that everybody in the kitchen seemed to be caught up in an inexplicable flurry of agitation. ... On the other side of the darkened window of the kitchen, crossing the gangway which led from the cruiser to a luxurious suite overhead was the Man in the murals, the successor of the Creator of the idea of juche (self-reliance), whose girth gave the measure of his power, followed by his entourage. The Leader-hero was immediately recognizable by the distinctive cut of his hair, a style of his own, unique not only in Korea but in the rest of the world. I am not in the position to say whether it really was Him, but our Chef, who had no reason to fib, was, for the space of several minutes, utterly speechless. ... He said he felt as if he had seen God, and I still envy him this experience.
And this, closer to home. Chris Sommers, owner of Pi, a "green"** pizzeria, recieves the beck from Team Barry.
THE OBAMAS ORDER OUT FOR PIZZA –
FROM ST. LOUIS
April 9, 2009 (People) - "It's surreal, it's a huge honor," says Sommers, 33, who flew to the nation's capital Thursday to make 20 pizzas for the Obama family and staff.
For our green takeout diners, this represents a massive 1,428-mile pizza takeout carbon footprint.** [Pause.] Of course, we understand that privileged leaders cannot be expected to support the local economy or spare Gaea by ordering from the neighborhood Dominio's. [We lean into the lectern.] Green is for the little people. Green is for YOU.
The president first tasted Sommers's San Francisco-style pies, served at his St. Louis restaurant Pi, while campaigning in Missouri last fall. An Obama supporter, Sommers offered to deliver a few frozen pies to the president after the election but was told he couldn't send food to the White House because of security concerns.Instead, Reggie Love, one of the president's closest aides and a fellow fan of Sommers's deep-dish and thin-crust creations, arranged to have the pizza chef bring 20 pounds of dough and 3 gallons of sauce at Sommers's expense to the White House kitchen and cook there Friday. Mr. Sommers:
It will be casual lunch. Hopefully we'll have a chance to say hello to the president.

CHOPE.
Dear leaders. Whatever they want. Damn the hollow pieties.

* Part I here; Part II here.
** Under "Community > Green" you will find this in the restaurant's "eco-chic" policy:
Through the use of post-consumer products, locally-grown and sustainable purchasing, significant carbon-offset purchases and wind-energy investment to mitigate Pizza ovens and product shipping, elimination of bottled beer and bottled water, eco-friendly kitchen practices and conservation, reclaimed building materials and furniture, lowenergy lighting, and an active recycling program, Pi aims to be a green leader, setting an example for other restaurants, businesses and consumers to minimize their carbon footprint.
Yes. All well and good -- except at the beck of Team Barry.
