NYC Letter: CHOPE, The TV Series

UPDATE 05.22.09: Correspondent V de T (not a "Visitor") brings this prophetic clip from the original V series (1984) to our attention. Actual dialogue:

Human: How did someone like that get to be your leader anyway?

Reptile: Charisma. Circumstances, promises. Not enough of us spoke out to question him until it was too late. It happens on your planet doesn't it?

Human: I guess it does.

Yes. It does.

Synopsis: Alien politicians pretending to be friendly come to Washington and are received openly. The politicians have disguised themselves to look just like enlightened reformers (they're really clueless reptiles). Soon it is discovered that the politicians' ideas are a mush of discredited notions from the Summer of Love. They have come to transform the economy into a redistributive tool of government, socialize health care (and here), turn defense into peackeeping, sign on as a junior partner in world affairs, and spend gobs of money (and this and this, and this) in the process. The war for America begins. An important key to the Americans' success is distinguishing their own from the aliens.

Those original programmers at ABC are remaking the 1980's TV series "V". The plotline is much as we've given it above except that instead of politicians offering CHOPE, they're desperate reptiles. [Pause.] Close enough.
