NYC Letter: Fidel Castro, World Hero
Day 228 of CHOPE
Caught us completely by surprise. Godless Castro is "the best disciple of Jesus".
MIGUEL D´ESCOTO: «FIDEL CASTRO
The president of the UN General Assembly, Nicaraguan Miguel D'Escoto, said today in Havana that the Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, is "the best disciple of Jesus." "Fidel is for me, today, the best disciple of Jesus. I was privileged to be near him, to observe him, to hear him, to see him, and he is a man in love with justice, brotherhood, solidarity," said the priest and former Sandinista foreign minister.
D'Escoto emphasized that the UN must be "reinvented", introducing in Havana his book "Anti-imperialism and non-violence" to the Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon and Culture Minister Abel Prieto, among other officials.

It gets better. The UN -- "'after extensive consultation' among representatives of the General Assembly’s member countries" -- has trumped up a medal for Mr. Castro as “World Hero of Solidarity”, along with a "World Hero of Mother Earth" medal for socialist Evo Morales, president of Bolivia.
“What we want to do is present these three* people to the world and say that they embody virtues and values worth emulation by all of us,” said D’Escoto, who like the socialist Morales is a staunch critic of U.S. foreign policy in Latin America.
Surprisingly no "World Hero of Social Finances" medal for Mr. Mugabe. Also no posthumous award for the little chairman, a recognized "World Hero of Stateless Terrorism". [Pause.] Or how about ""World Hero of Anti-Zionism". Or education. Or something.

* The African socialist Julius Nyerere was posthumously awarded a medal as “World Hero of Social Justice" also.
