NYC Letter: Nuance, Part I
Day 238 of CHOPE
On Sunday May 31 Dr. George Tiller, a notorious late-term abortionist, was shot and killed at Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas. The alleged gunman Scott Roeder is in police custody charged with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Mr. Roeder is alleged to have murdered Dr. Tiller because of his trade.
The same day Mr. Obama issued the following statement, which can be found on the White House Web site.
STATEMENT FROM THE PRESIDENT
ON THE MURDER OF DR. GEORGE TILLER
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON May 31, 2009 (White House) - I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.
On Friday September 11 James Pouillon, a pro-life activist, was shot and killed outside the Owosso High School in Owosso, Michigan. The alleged gunman Harlan J. Drake is in police custody charged with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder and related firearm felonies. Mr. Drake is alleged to have murdered Mr. Pouillon because of his witness against abortion.
Two days later Mr. Obama briefly remarked Mr. Pouillon's shooting. Sparsely reported, the statement cannot be found on the White house Web site.
The shooting last week in Michigan was deplorable. Whichever side of a public debate you're on, violence is never the right answer.
Ah, who?
CHOPE.
Nuance.
