Every desecration pumps up the wheezing of indignation from government luminaries. There are emphysemic wheezes for the "utmost exemplarity" in applying the law, then, what? Nothing until the next desecration.
The government inspires neither in its convictions nor its application of the law a sufficient deterrent to anti-Semites. From across the Atlantic, all this looks like a settled routine between anti-Semites and the government. The government lacks the conviction to excise the settled habits of Republican anti-Semiticism. It's all very delicate. France, who never hesitates to lecture lesser states on their moral failings while interposing simple French remedies, asks forbearance from all when it comes to minding her own shop. It's very complicated. Very delicate. Exclusively a French affair, Monsieur.
The French government sputters for purposes of the news reports -- promising the full measure of head-breaking allowed by law -- then hunkers down to wait out the news cycle.
Or in the case of the Interior Minister, retires to his study to put finishing touches on yet another potboiler in an endless succession of potboilers extolling the incontestable glory of France.
Meanwhile France's incontestable glory, such as it is, continues to be painted up with the aerosol messages of anti-Semites.
